A clock out time calculator answers one question: what time can I go home? It adds the hours you need to work and your unpaid lunch to the time you clocked in. It is handy for hourly employees with a set number of hours, part-time workers who must stay under a limit, and managers planning shifts so nobody slips into overtime.

How to calculate your clock-out time

  1. Enter your clock-in time. Type the time you clocked in, such as 7:52 am or 13:30.
  2. Enter the hours you need. Type the hours you need to work today, for example 8, 7.5 or 7:30. Or switch to the weekly mode and enter the hours you have so far.
  3. Add your unpaid lunch. Type your unpaid lunch or break in minutes. Paid rest breaks don't need to be added.
  4. Read your clock-out time. The calculator shows the exact time to clock out, plus a table for 4 to 12 hour shifts.

Reaching 40 hours without going over

If you are paid hourly, hours over 40 in a workweek usually earn overtime at 1.5 times your rate. Some employers ask staff to stop at exactly 40, others want you to hit 40 before the week ends. In the weekly mode, type the hours already on your time card (you can use hours:minutes like 32:15 or decimals like 32.25) and the goal. The calculator works out the time left and tells you when to punch out today.

Lunch breaks and your clock-out time

Only unpaid time pushes your clock-out later. Under federal rules a bona fide meal break, usually 30 minutes or more with no work duties, can be unpaid. Short rest breaks of 5 to 20 minutes are paid, so you don't add them. Some states, including California, require a meal break after a certain number of hours, so check your state's rules and your employer's policy.

Rounding can move your clock-out time

If your employer rounds punches to the nearest quarter hour, clocking out at 4:22 pm may count as 4:15 pm, while 4:23 pm counts as 4:30 pm. Ask how your time clock rounds, and when the week is done, check your total with the free time card calculator, which supports 5, 6 and 15 minute rounding.

Frequently asked questions

What time do I clock out if I start at 8 am and work 8 hours?

With a 30 minute unpaid lunch you clock out at 4:30 pm. With a 1 hour lunch it is 5:00 pm, and with no unpaid lunch it is 4:00 pm.

How do I calculate my clock-out time?

Add the hours you need to work to your clock-in time, then add your unpaid lunch. Example: 7:45 am + 8 hours = 3:45 pm, + 30 minutes lunch = 4:15 pm.

How do I work out when I reach 40 hours this week?

Switch to the weekly mode, enter the hours you have worked so far (for example 32:15) and your goal of 40. The calculator subtracts to get the hours left (7:45) and adds them, plus lunch, to today's clock-in time.

What time should I clock out to avoid overtime?

Use the weekly mode with a goal of 40 hours. If your state has daily overtime (California pays overtime after 8 hours in a day), also keep the hours today at 8 or less.

Does a 15 minute break change my clock-out time?

Usually not. Under federal rules, short rest breaks of 5 to 20 minutes are paid work time, so you don't add them. Only add unpaid meal breaks, which are normally 30 minutes or longer.

What if my shift goes past midnight?

The calculator shows the clock-out time with (next day), for example 6:30 AM (next day) for a 10:00 pm start and 8 hours with a 30 minute break.
