Worked examples
- 8 hours 15 minutes = 8 + 0.25 = 8.25 hours
- 7 hours 40 minutes = 7 + 0.67 = 7.67 hours
- 38 hours 50 minutes = 38 + 0.83 = 38.83 hours; at $18/hour that is $698.94
- Not 7.30: 7 hours 30 minutes is 7.50 hours. Writing 7.30 underpays by 12 minutes.
Quarter-hour rounding chart (the 7-minute rule)
Many time clocks round each punch to the nearest 15 minutes. Minutes past the hour convert like this:
| Minutes past the hour | Decimal | Rounds to |
|---|---|---|
| 0 to 7 | 0.00 | :00 |
| 8 to 22 | 0.25 | :15 |
| 23 to 37 | 0.50 | :30 |
| 38 to 52 | 0.75 | :45 |
| 53 to 60 | 1.00 | next hour |
Tenth-of-an-hour chart (6-minute increments)
Some employers and law firms bill or pay in tenths of an hour. Each tenth is 6 minutes:
| Minutes | Tenths of an hour |
|---|---|
| 0 to 5 | 0.0 |
| 6 to 11 | 0.1 |
| 12 to 17 | 0.2 |
| 18 to 23 | 0.3 |
| 24 to 29 | 0.4 |
| 30 to 35 | 0.5 |
| 36 to 41 | 0.6 |
| 42 to 47 | 0.7 |
| 48 to 53 | 0.8 |
| 54 to 59 | 0.9 |
Federal rules allow rounding to the nearest 5 minutes, tenth or quarter of an hour only if, over time, it doesn't shortchange employees. Rounding that always goes in the employer's favor isn't allowed.

Frequently asked questions
How do you convert minutes to decimal hours?
Divide the minutes by 60. For example 45 minutes / 60 = 0.75 hours, and 8 hours 20 minutes = 8 + 20/60 = 8.33 hours.
What is 7 hours 30 minutes in decimal?
7.50 hours. A common payroll mistake is to write 7.30, which is only 7 hours 18 minutes.
How do you convert decimal hours back to minutes?
Multiply the decimal part by 60. 6.4 hours is 6 hours plus 0.4 x 60 = 24 minutes, so 6 hours 24 minutes.
How many decimal places should payroll use?
Most payroll systems use two decimal places. Some time clocks record tenths of an hour (6-minute increments) or quarter hours. Use the same precision your payroll provider expects, and round consistently.
